Teaching has long been recognized as one of the most rewarding careers because of the opportunity a teacher has to help mold and engage young minds. Now, even if you have a full-time job, you can get your education degree online to teach and become involved in a rewarding and exciting career. The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards recognizes that an online education degree from an accredited school is a comparable education to a degree from a traditional school, and may even use the same curriculum.

Online schools in education can offer degrees at virtually any level. Whether you haven’t attended college before and need to start from scratch, or if you already have a bachelor degree and want to attain a master’s degree or a PhD, an online college can help you. If you want to teach at the pre-school level, you can get an associate degree in early childhood education and then become certified. The rules of the federal No Child Left Behind act require that all teachers in public schools at the elementary, middle, and high-school level hold a bachelor’s degree at a minimum. Additionally, most states also require a certification to teach at those levels.

There are a variety of different kinds of online education degrees. If a person wants to teach at the elementary education level, they can get an elementary education degree, which covers elementary education broadly and generally; for teaching in grades K – 6 in a variety of subjects, including math, social studies and language arts. However, not all teachers want to be general education teachers, and many school districts are leaning toward team teaching. Team teaching occurs at all grade levels when a team of teachers with specialty certificates work together on rotating schedules with several classes of children, each teaching their certified specialty.

In addition to specialties in mathematics and science, online colleges also offer specialty degrees in reading and literacy. A reading and literacy teacher works closely not only with students and teachers, but also with parents to help improve student’s literacy levels by providing skills and tools to help bring up reading levels, thus improving learning in all other subjects, too. Literacy specialists create programs that assess and help improve student’s reading levels; they may implement school-wide reading programs in conjunction with local libraries and other entities interested in literacy.

For students who are interested in mathematics and the sciences, the prospects in education are very good. Online colleges offer specialized degrees in math and the sciences at all teaching levels. These types of specialists are highly sought after in all school districts, and may be eligible for special loan forgiveness on federal student loans if certain requirements are met, up to $17,500. Some states are in such need of math and science teachers that they have special certification programs for people who hold bachelor degrees in those subjects. They will allow holders of these bachelor degrees to teach while they are in the process of attaining their teaching certificate. Online colleges can help these much-needed teachers with certification programs that they can complete after their teaching day is completed, offering a flexibility that regular colleges can’t.

People who want to teach older students may choose to specialize with middle-school or secondary education degrees from online schools. These degrees, along with state required certifications, will allow a graduate to teach at the middle and high school levels, utilizing age-appropriate methodologies and techniques. There are also a number of specialty degrees and certifications available for students who want to teach older children and adolescents covering a broad range of subjects, from literature to biology or other science, to special education or history.

People who are interested not only in education, but also in administration, may be attracted to one of the specialized education administrative degrees that many online colleges offer. Library management, curriculum development, and education administration are a few of these types of degrees. Being an administrator at a school means managing the educational processes that teachers use as well as minding over the safety and well-being of hundreds, or even thousands, of students.

Some people who have been dreaming of teaching but who already have a bachelor degree in another subject that isn’t education can still become qualified to teach. Online schools offer certifications for students who already hold bachelor degrees in school subjects like math, the sciences, or English. Additionally, students who are enrolled in course online programs are entitled to apply for federal student aid to help pay for their online degree education programs, so becoming a teacher may be easier than you think.
